How to cancel an AI girlfriend app subscription

The off switch is almost never in the app, because the app is usually not what charged you. The three routes, how to tell which one is yours, and what you keep until the date you already paid for.

You have decided to stop paying, you open the app expecting a button, and settings offers you everything except that one. This is the ordinary experience and mostly it is not the app being slippery. To cancel an AI girlfriend app subscription you usually have to go somewhere the app does not control, because the app is generally not the thing that charged you. Getting that wrong costs real money in a specific way: people delete the app, assume deleting ended it, and find the same charge on the statement a month later.

You cancel an AI girlfriend app subscription where you paid

A companion app can take your money by three routes, and each one keeps the control in a different place.

  • Apple. If you subscribed inside an iPhone or iPad app, Apple is the merchant and the subscription sits in your Apple account. Apple's page on cancelling a subscription has the route for each device and for the web. The app's developer cannot cancel it for you even if it wants to.
  • Google. The same arrangement on Android: the subscription lives in the Play Store under your Google account, and Google's guide to cancelling on Google Play is the path to it.
  • The company itself. If you paid on the website with a card, nothing about it touches a store. The control is in the account settings on that website, and the mobile app may not acknowledge the subscription exists.

More apps now sell the same tier both ways, usually at two different prices, which is why "I cancelled it in the app" means nothing on its own. The store routes take two taps and cannot be argued with. The website route is where the quality of the company shows.

Two minutes to work out which route is yours

Search your email for the app's name and read who sent the receipt. A receipt from Apple or from Google Play tells you the store took the payment. A receipt from the company, or from a payment processor on its behalf, tells you it did. If you find nothing, open the subscription list in whichever store is on your phone — an app that is not in that list did not bill you through it.

Two things get mistaken for cancelling. Deleting the app from your phone does nothing to the billing; the subscription is attached to your store account, not to the icon. And closing your account with the company is a different operation again, which may or may not stop a store subscription — worth reading what deleting an account actually removes first. Cancel, then delete, so you are not hunting for a billing screen inside an account you have already closed.

Cancelling ends the renewal, not the month

This is the part that stops people hesitating. Cancelling an app-store subscription does not switch anything off today. Both stores keep your access running to the end of the period you have already paid for, and the account then falls back to the free tier. Buy a month on the third and cancel on the tenth, and you have the rest of that month exactly as before.

the days between cancelling and the renewal date are already bought

So the sensible moment to cancel is the day you decide, not the day before renewal. There is nothing to gain by waiting and one obvious thing to lose. What happens to the rest of it:

  • The character and the conversation. Normally untouched. Cancelling is a billing action, not a deletion, and the history is usually still there if you resubscribe later.
  • Paid-tier features. These stop at the period end. Longer memory, voice and image generation are the usual first casualties, and some apps keep the past messages visible while declining to use them as context.
  • Credits and coin balances. Bought separately, so they do not cancel with the plan and they are not refunded with it either. If you are sitting on a balance, spend it before the period ends rather than after, because a coin balance on a free account is often unusable.
  • The price you were on. Gone. More on that below.

A cancellation is not a refund

These are two separate requests and the stores treat them that way. Cancelling stops the next charge; it does not return the current one, and clicking cancel never triggers a refund by itself. For money back on a charge that already landed you have to ask, through the store if the store billed you, and the answer depends on how recent it is and the reason you give. Google's route is more forgiving in the first couple of days after a charge than later; Apple's is a request form with a judgement call behind it.

Cancelling is about the next charge. Everything about the last one is a separate conversation.

The one case to move quickly on is a free trial. Trials convert by design and the cancellation has to land before the conversion — Apple asks for at least twenty-four hours of margin, and a renewal that has already processed is a refund request rather than a cancellation. It is the trap described in how a free trial ends: not a surprise charge so much as a deadline nobody put in the calendar.

Pause, downgrade, and the case for not cancelling today

Cancelling is the right answer less often than it looks, so here is the argument against the thing this article explains how to do. Three alternatives are worth a look first.

  • Pause. Google Play lets you pause some subscriptions for a set stretch rather than ending them, typically from a week up to three months, and it resumes on its own. If you are going away, or just want a quiet month, this keeps the plan and the price intact.
  • Downgrade. Many apps have a cheap middle tier that nobody advertises, visible only once you start the cancellation. If the problem is the amount rather than the app, that tier is the fix.
  • The price you are grandfathered on. This is the real cost of cancelling. Companion app pricing has moved steadily upward, and an old plan is usually honoured until you leave it. Cancel a plan you bought eighteen months ago and the resubscribe button will show you today's number.

Expect a retention offer somewhere in the website flow — a discount, a free month, an extra tier. Taking it is not a mistake if you wanted the app at that price, and it tells you something either way: a company that can afford a discount for a leaver was charging you more than it needed to. If you are shopping again, check whether the cancellation route is stated plainly on the pricing page. It is the best single signal of how the rest of the billing will go, and the app we currently recommend states it.

Do not rely on the law to make any of this easy. A United States rule requiring cancellation to be as simple as signing up was struck down in 2025 and is being written again, so the picture is unsettled. The store routes were never affected by it, and remain the shortest path.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting the app cancel the subscription?

No. The subscription belongs to your Apple or Google account rather than to the installed app, and it renews whether or not the app is on the phone. Cancel it in the store first, then delete the app if you want to.

Do I lose access as soon as I cancel an AI girlfriend app subscription?

Not on either app store. You keep the paid tier until the end of the period you have already paid for, then the account drops to the free tier. Cancelling early in a billing period costs you nothing, which is why there is no reason to wait.

Can I get the character back if I resubscribe later?

Usually, as long as you did not delete the account as well. Cancelling only stops the billing, so the character, the settings and the history are typically still waiting. The price you come back to may not be the one you left on.
